The Upload Speed Math Churches Get Wrong
Most churches check their internet plan, see “100 Mbps” or “gigabit,” and assume they’re covered. That number is download speed. Streaming lives and dies on upload speed instead.
A standard 1080p stream uses about 6 Mbps. An upload plan capped at 10 Mbps is living on the edge: a small dip in ISP performance, or a staff member uploading a large file, is enough to kill the feed.
The fix: run a speed test, like fast.com, from the actual streaming computer. Under 10 Mbps upload, 1080p isn’t reliable. Drop to 720p until the plan gets upgraded.
WiFi vs. Ethernet: The Network War
If the stream is cutting out and it’s connected over WiFi, that’s almost always the reason.
Sunday morning is a network war. When a few hundred people walk into the building, their phones start hunting for signal, creating radio interference the router has to fight through. Add brick, stone, and steel construction, and WiFi signal degrades further.
